If a horse, greyhound or individual in a race has ‘placed’ it has finished in a position that pays out a return to bettors who bet on a place. The place is typically the top three runners in a race (1st, 2nd and 3rd) but can commonly be only the top two (1st and 2nd) in races with seven or fewer runners.
